Chandigarh, Oct 13: The Chandigarh district court on Friday framed charges against Haryana BJP President Subhash Barala’s son Vikas Barala in the Varnika Kundu stalking case. The court charged Barala with abduction. Varnika Kundu, daughter of Haryana IAS Officer VS Kundu, accused Barala and one of his friends of stalking her and trying to kidnap her on the intervening night of August 4 and 5.
Vikas Barala was arrested in the case on August 9 and has been in custody since then. While investigation into the case is on, Kundu’s father Virendra Kundu has been transferred and posted as Additional Chief Secretary, Science and Technology Department. Here is a timeline of all that has happened in the case from August 5 till October 13:
Intervening night of August 4, 5: Varnika Kundu posted on social media on August 5 that the two youth started following her car when she was driving from Chandigarh towards Panchkula on the intervening night of August 4 and 5. She claimed that at one point, their SUV blocked her way and one youth jumped out of it and started walking towards her vehicle. While she reversed at full speed and tried to evade them, they continued to follow her. Kundu said she then called up the Police Control Room and gave the number details of the SUV. Police intercepted the car at the boundary of Chandigarh and Panchkula.
August 7: The incident led to outrage over the social media. The outrage grew more after some BJP leaders took to Twitter to defend Vikas Barala and also shamed Kundu by sharing some of her previous pictures. From Babul Supriyo to Shaina NC, Kundu was shamed by many BJP leaders for “venturing out with guys late at night.”
August 8: There was ruckus in Delhi Assembly and two BJP leaders were marshalled out.
August 9: The Chandigarh police pasted summons notice outside Vikas Barala’s house asking both the accused to appear at the Sector-26 police station. The summons came after the police retrieved CCTV footage of the incident. Barala and his friend were arrested on the same day.
August 12: After 2-day custody, Barala and his friend were produced in court. The court remanded them to judicial custody till August 25.
August 29: The bail pleas of Barala and his friend came up for hearing in a district court. The court rejected their bail plea, keeping them in custody.
September 13: Varnika Kundu’s father IAS officer Virender S Kundu was transferred. Kundu got posted as Additional Chief Secretary, Science and Technology Department. Earlier, he was looking after state’s Tourism Department. The report further says that the senior IAS officer will keep looking after State University of Performing and Visual Arts, Rohtak, as its Vice-Chancellor.
October 13: The Chandigarh District Court framed the charges of abduction against Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar. The duo was booked for stalking and kidnapping Varnika Kundu, a Chandigarh-based disc jockey.
